When I was 25 I was diagnosed with Systemic Scleroderma. Information was rare as the disease itself but what facts I did manage to uncover were devastating. This disease has no known cause or cure. My prognosis was that I would be grotesquely disfigured and certain to die of heart, liver, or kidney failure within a few short years.
I spent the summer of 1997 at the Sierra Integrative Medical Center (SIMC) under the care of Dr. Katrina Tang. After spending two weeks at the clinic talking with patients afflicted with arthritis, Lyme disease, Lupus, hepatitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and many other disorders, I began my treatment for my own "incurable disease".
My customized treatment program developed at the clinic consisted of intravenous infusions, injections, oral vitamins, supplements, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Within a feww days I started to feel a positive and gradual change. Beyond my wildest dreams, day by day, my symptoms gradually began to improve. Miraculously, I watched myself get better. That was the summer of 1997. Today, I am an active, fully functional human being. I now own a small gift business, serve on three board of directors, and am president of Rotary. I had been sick for a very long time but by 1991, I was significantly worse. I had been under the care of a physician for what was diagnosed as migraines. These devastating headaches dictated my life - my six weeks of vacation time were scheduled around my headaches. They would last anywhere from 3 to 10 days in duration and I would get them every 3 to 4 weeks. Even the Demerol shots I was taking every three months for pain stopped working - the effects would last only six hours. My introduction to the Sierra Integrative Medical Center (SIMC) and Dr. Katrina Tang started when I accompanied my wife Julie, who was recovering from from severe mercury poisoning and suffering from food allergies. The thoroughness Julies exam and teh genuine concern of the SIMC staff made me ask the question , "would I benefit from a more through exam?" My yearly pysical at our local clinic gave me a clean bill of health and I generally felt good, except for some aches and pains that I attributed to aging.
My initial exam showed my carotid to be 50% plugged and a general deterioration of my circulatory system. In addition. Lyme disease was present in my system, and numerous food allergies were apparent. What a wake up call for me!

I had little indication that there was a health problem the day I collapsed with chest pain, palpitation, and numbness in both my arms. My physician subsequently diagnosed me as having mitral valve prolapse and arrhythmia even through my Electrocardiagram is normal and there was no history of heart problems on either side of my family for 3 generations. The first cardiologist said I needed a new mitral valve. The second said I needed a pacemaker.
I came to Sierra Integrative Medical Center (SIMC) and Dr. Katrina Tang. I could not believe the three days of testing at this clinic finally revealed what years of testing at "regular" hospitals and specialsts could not! SIMC was the only place that the diagnoses lined up with what I was feeling in my own body. They found I had Methylene Chloride exposure, which turns out to Carbone Monoxide in blood streams causing circulation problems. Aside from positive Lyme disease, I also had elevated titers of Epstein Barr Virus and Cytomegalovirus. The physical examination also revealed an elarged spleen and liver which explained my comprehension deterioration, low energy and the need to sleep more than ten hours a day.
Today I am a 49-year-old man in a 25 year-old body! I have as much energy as my two boys (ages 10 and 14) and my wife now accuses me of being a pest (but I know she is not complaining!) I believe in teh power of prayer. I also believe that if we are sick, we need to do the possible and let God do the impossible.
